Android Version Available! - Potential Polish and Russian Localization
Greetings weary travelers.
Your guide Ze here. I hope you're well, healthy, peaceful, and happy.
The Remainder is receiving a new update!
Android Version Available
Nim, my partner, is an actual wizard. This I'm sure of, because they'd cooked up an android version of The Remainder in a few days.
You can download it now, please choose:
the-remainder-android-arm64-act1.apk
Most people should download this version, it's for newer phones, basically any made in the last 10 years.
the-remainder-android-univ-act1.ap
This version is for older phones. If the arm64 version doesn't work for you, try this one.
The android version of the game has newly designed menus, icons, and screen layouts optimized for portrait mode.
They practically re-built the game from scratch in Ren'Py!
I think it looks fantastic and feels responsive, maybe slightly more so than the PC version, and hope you'll check it out.
We had to remove a few minor things to optimize the file size, the animation in the backgrounds being one of them. We can add that back in the future if we figure out a way to keep the file sizes reasonable. The gallery also took a back seat. Again, it's something we're playing with and may come back in the future.
We don't have the resources to thoroughly test this version though, so if you spot any bugs or weirdness, please let us know and we'll look into it.
Polish and Russian Localization Efforts Underway:
We're starting to work on Polish and Russian localization thanks to some lovely people who've volunteered to help.
Our goal is two folds, first, we'd like to have a good translation so that people can enjoy the game in their native Polish or Russian language.
Second, we want to have inclusive language for non-binary/LGBTQ readers, since our characters are non-binary, we'd like to see them represented with the appropriate language. This may be slightly tricky since not every language have readily available non-binary pronouns, so some testing and tweaking may be needed to get it right/
If you speak Polish or Russian, we would like to invite you to test out the translation soon.
If you speak other languages and wish to volunteer to localize The Remainder for another language, we welcome you to contact us.
Thanks for reading, take care of yourself out there!

Wowow
I'm Russian and if you yet need some help at testing, I'm up to
Thank you, that's great to know. We will make a devlog post when the testing version is ready, hope you'll keep an eye out for that.
Cheers!
Hi! It's very nice to hear that translation into Russian and Polish might be available at some point. As a nonbinary Russian speaker who uses they/them pronouns in my native language, it would be cool to see characters using the same ones in this game (which is totally possible, despite what other commenter said). Wish you all the best with this!
Hey, thanks for your feedback.
So in Russian you find it most natural to use the standard third person pronoun for non-binary character?
You might stumble into some problems if you want to make a gender neutral translation into Polish and Russian as these are languages that have VERY strict grammar rules that segregate things into female/male/neutral (neutral as in things, not people) forms. Not saying the translation is impossible, but characters WILL have use He/She pronouns at some point as there are simply no gender neutral pronouns in the language.
Hope for the best I suppose.
Hey, yes I had a feeling about this, since Nim is Croatian and their language is somewhat similar to other Slavic languages. But it's alright, we'll just do the best we can. :)
You might as well have the characters speak in third person.
Ok, thanks so much for your feedback, that's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for in order to figure out how to move forward. I'll make a note of what you said, and collect some more data then go from there. Cheers!
Oh, it's so nice to see that you want to translate your game for other languages! (Especially Polish, hehe). I'm really curious how you solve the problem with good pronouns for NB, I'd love to see it. It's time for my language to evolve. I'm waiting for the translation!
Miłego dnia życzę! <3
To be honest, I'm not nearly proficient enough at Polish to be able to judge by myself, so I have to rely on other good-intentioned and knowledgeable people.
Our wonderful volunteer has suggested to me Onu/jenu, so we'll make a small test based on that and test it out. I hope you'll share your feedback when that's out. :)
Definitelly! That'll be really interesting to see! ;)
Good luck!
As a native Pole, the Onu/Jenu thing sound... well dumb. Like I said in a different comment the best course of action would be using third person speech if the characters are genderless.
