Is your twitter hacked? or are you actually shilling for NFTs? bc I want to make an informed decision before buying the game.
Chronicles of Tal’Dun: The Remainder
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Chronicles of Tal’Dun: The Remainder is a dark fantasy mystery where you will try to save The High Magus Vyn from certain death. Will you find your way alone or will you reignite a lost love? Is it worth the sacrifice? Do you deserve to be saved?
You're woken up with no memory of your past by an elegant, enigmatic stranger called Ilar who tells you that a door to the abyss has opened up and threatens to consume you, unless you do exactly as they say.
Finding the secrets, however, will not be easy, for they're locked tight within your research journal, written on scattered letters, and lying between the lines of Ilar's words.
This story requires some hands-on deduction. All clues are there if you can recognize them. Each playthrough will give you some insight into the events which transpired, but it’s up to you to connect them. Find your way through the secrets and get to the bottom of this mystery.
The game includes descriptions of sexual themes, violence, blood, physical and mental abuse, self harm, death, and suicide. Characters are going through emotional struggle and are dealing with a life threatening situation. If you are sensitive to some of this content please proceed with care. Recommended to a mature audience.
By buying Act 2 for $20 you will unlock all future content of the game. Doing so will help us fund the creation of the last chapter which is expected to be finished at the beginning of 2022. Once the game is done its price tag will remain $20.

Well from what I saw the re-posts have been going on from October last year, at least thats when the original posts were made (plus they actually posted a reply to one of those tweets in December), you would think they would remove the link to that account from this games' official account if it was hacked, right? Especially since the games' twitter has been active recently so its not like its been abandoned. 🤷♀️
Hmm, I’m looking at the twitter and I see only game updates so I think it’s not hacked, I hope. >_< I don’t spend almost any time on twitter these days so I don’t know if Ze is doing something with it. We are not planning to do nothing related to NFTs with our game but we are interested in learning about cryptos on a personal level. I hope that answers your question and helps with your decision.
Hi there! I could use a little help. I purchased Act 2 today and I am unable to download it through the Itch.io desktop app. When I try to select a file to install, there is nothing to select in the dropdown. If I try to install anyway, I get an error message that says "Cannot read property 'build' of undefined". I'm using windows 10 pro, if that helps at all. Thank you and sorry about this.
Hello! I’m sorry to hear you are having trouble with installing the game. :( I’m googling to try and find what to do about it, and it seems that people with this problem are still able to download the game normally from the website itself. The problem is only using the app. Can you try doing that? If it still doesn’t work I’ll try to see if I can do something on my end, but it’s weird since you are the first person to tell us about this issue.
I am in love with this VN, and have big heart eyes for Vyn and Ilar. This is probably my favorite art of any VN I've ever played. It is seriously stunning, and I can tell a lot of work went into it. I love that the writing gives me otherworldy and uncanny feelings. Sometimes the uncannyness can feel disturbing, and other times it can feel whimsical when the humor comes out. I'm so excited for more content!
Thank you so much for enjoying our story and art! We will do our best and continue to improve. <3
Just started Act One and it's really cool and interesting! One thing though.... How do i change the portrait, or can we only have the one appearance? I've tried many things but can't seem to change it, lol.
By default MC appearance is undefined. Since except several features like an eel tattoo, piercings and the skin markings of the "Dyed" caste, MC appearance is never described which leaves to the greatest freedom of imagining your own character. The one design you can see is one Ze and I imagined for ourselves and some people liked it so we added it to the game as a bonus and if you choose our premade Vyn you will see two bonus images. But it makes no impact to the story whatsoever. So you can safely ignore our premade character.
(I rated with this comment but, I wanted to post it here too)
I played this game on steam and I wanted to leave a review here as well because this game deserves a good review in every platform, even if I'm bad at English when I'm the one writing. Like MeiZi said in their review: "This is one of my absolute favourites. Esoteric, foreboding, and romantic vibes. Playing gives me a feeling similar to watching Mushishi at 3am or reading too much poetry before bed: strange, melancholic, and sort of comforting all at once. Goes well with tea."
It's exactly how I feel. When Ilar sometimes talks to Vyr or I read his letters, my heart hurt. I thought I could feel the longing and dreams of better days, written in paper, and I feel the longing lasts to the present day, tugging at my heartstrings to the point I know it will pull harder the further I read in the next acts and this story will steal it from me.
It's like you're catering to all my favourite points, honestly, hahah, with their relationship, the worldbuilding, Vyr's thoughts as they struggle with what to do, the art and ambience sounds...
Everything is beautifully designed. The sounds are beautiful, the art is beautiful, Ilar is beautiful, Vyr is beautiful, the letters and paper birds are beautiful... Just- everything.
Thank you for working into making this game and sorry for the lenghty review in my average English, but I wanted to convey a bit how I felt. Can't wait for Act 2, Act 3 and even if it saddens me, the end of it all. Honestly, thank you a lot! This game deserves more attention, to reach and touch more people. I hope it does soon enough!
Have a lovely day, developers.
Thank you, it's heartwarming to hear how much you've enjoyed our story. It's not our goal to cause heart-ache, it's quite the opposite, really. :)
I hope you'll keep immersing in the story and give us more valuable feedback!
I dipped my feet into the world of The Remainder for a “First Impression”-video and can only say that the art work and details is absolutely beautiful and the writing is gorgeous. I absolutely have to agree with Nikki (comment below) that it’s fascinating to watch myself trust and mistrust Ilar in an ever-changing succession. It’s a great basis for a mystery :D
That was a fun watch for me. ^^
I'm glad you enjoyed it, can't wait to see how you find Act 2.
That Ilar is a handful, eh?
I found myself fascinated within the first few minutes, and that fascination has kept with me for a couple days now. I've replayed it quite a few times to see what new insights, letters, or surprises a different choice can bring. normally, I would never try to exhaust the permutations each choice can bring, because I don't like to do things that feel wrong or cruel, as a player or as the character. in this game, I feel like refusing to try something different would be the wrong choice. it feels reasonable in this terrifying and deadly situation to be willing to do anything. and it's not like things could get worse...
what especially drives my willingness to experiment is a constantly shifting sense of how I feel about Ilar. one session, I might distrust them utterly, and try to act against them- but in doing so I wound their feelings, and they respond by showing what feels like genuine care. next time, I might try to go along with them eagerly because I want to help them, but a suddenly grim reaction of theirs makes me feel like I made a mistake in trusting them too much. I genuinely don't know what I make of them, and I love navigating that tension.
the art is beautiful, especially the character portraits, and the details of the handwriting. and the soundtrack has such variety! the music is always enveloping, and it was one of the first things that really drew me in. it does a lot to drive the feeling of every scene.
one thing I'd like to see done differently though, is for dialogue lines to be more clear about who said what. the history function identifies every line, which is good, but when I'm reading dialogue for the first time, I found myself getting easily confused when Ilar or the protagonist spoke multiple times in a row.
every aspect of this world you've created makes me want to learn as much as I can about it. I haven't looked at the Fan Pack yet, but I expect to enjoy it for that reason! and I so look forward to exploring Act 2 when it's out, and what else comes in the future!
Thank you for all the kind words, there are few things more gratifying than to see someone enjoy our story as much as you do. There are good reasons that such tensions with Ilar exists, and I think your curiosity will bear fruition soon. ;)
random question but could I have a close up image of the mc's eel tattoo? :) I really like, also what would you call the style of its design? I'd like to see more
Aah, a fellow eel tattoo admirer! It is aquired in a special ritual and is not a simple image. There is quite a lot to tell about that tattoo and it will be revealed soon in Act2. Here are two versions we have so far.
I do not know if I will ever be able to describe how much I loved playing this. Right when I found it, the art style grabbed me- I knew I'd end up playing it for the art alone. The worldbuilding is good, the characters are very enjoyable, and the soundtrack is exquisite. I gasped out loud when I saw the pronouns for Fuzzpants, and now I think every game needs a magic cat with neopronouns. I fell for the art, then the world, and then the characters, and the more I think over it, the more I love it. I might just combust when the next act drops.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
I wasn't sure about the pronouns, but I guessed that there will be a few people here and there who'd really appreciate that. You're one of those people!
Please don't combust yet, there are more acts to come. :p
This game is exactly what I've been looking for for a long time! The art style is gorgeous, there is no other way to describe it. I love the sound design, it’s possible to feel the way the whispers ring in Vyn’s head, how they reverberate throughout them. It’s stunning. The story is very intriguing, the mystery captivating. I love the writing so much! It feels dreamy, surreal, and… floaty, I’d say. After reading the updates I'm also curious about the previous version which, if I'm not mistaken, was a bit more complicated? In any case, it feels rewarding to be able to unwrap the mystery with the protagonist. I wonder if I’ll be able to find all the letters, they give quite a lot of insight into the minds of the characters.
I loved xe/xem pronouns for Fuzzpants, that’s adorable. Also, Ilar and Vyn are very gender, if I do say so myself.
This comment is all over the place simply because I can't express my thoughts in a more coherent way due to the excitement I feel. I’d like to write a fanfic one day, but I don’t want to ruin the characterization, so I’ll probably put it off at least until the second part comes out. :)
If there's any more help needed with the Russian localization, I'd be glad to join! This game deserves all attention it can get. Meanwhile, I'm going to continue gushing about it to my friends, haha.
P. S. I've just bought the Fan Pack on Steam, but for some reason the folder isn't where it's supposed to be. I searched the game folders, then I tried to reinstall the game but it's still not there even though it's written that I have it installed? Magick. Not sure if this is the right place to report the issue, so I'm sorry if it's not!
Hey, thanks so much for your kind words, and if I'm not mistaken, you also left us review on steam, that's really appreciated. Not to mention buying the fan pack. :)
Just to be sure, you're the one I exchanged emails with to solve the fan pack issue, yes? So hopefully that's been taken care of, but if not, let me know at firstname.lastname@example.org
As for the previous version, the changes are honestly not that big in my opinion, it's mostly centered around the very beginning of the game, and mostly we just edited some text so that it's more clear who is speaking.
We'd love to get TR localized at some point, so I hope you'll stick around. For now, we have our hands full with just trying to finish Act 2 and then the rest of the game, so that will have to wait until later. :)
Once again I really appreciate all the ways you're supporting us and hope you'll find much enjoyment from what we do for a long time to come!
Haha, yes, I did! Thank you for making such a great game. :)
And no, that's not me. But I'll contact you there shortly, and hopefully this will be resolved for me as well.
I see, thank you for clarifying! I do hope to stick around for as long as it's possible, you've got me way too hooked to do otherwise, haha.
I also have another question! There's a Discord server, right? Is there any way to join it? If not, that's okay too. :)
>Just to be sure, you're the one I exchanged emails with to solve the fan pack issue, yes?
For late clarification, I was the one who emailed you about issue with fan pack :) (emi...email@example.com). Thanks again for help. I figured it wasn't only mine problem exactly after starscourge comment here on itch. Strangest thing, we (probably) both from Russia, but I not sure how (if at all) it could be connected with problem..
Haha, yeah it was a funny coincidence. Apparently, our story resonates with people from Russia. ^^
And after we investigated, it turned out to be a bug with the fan pack on steam, which has now been fixed.
So thanks again to both of you for letting me know!
The art style looks so good omg i can't wait to play this!! Is it a finished game or if not how many parts do you think will be out there?
Thank you! It's not yet finished, you can play act 1 already, which is around 35k words or so. Act 2 is planned to be release in July, it's estimated to be around 1.5-2x the length. The full game may contain 3 or 4 acts, depending on how the story goes. That's planned for beginning of next year, 2022.
Hello! I bought Story And Tea with Ilar on May 12th but still haven't received the link, can a request a re-send?
Everything in this game reminds me of my Brothers Grimm storybook. It is glorious!
hey I loved the font you used!
This is one of my absolute favorites. Esoteric, foreboding, and romantic vibes. Playing gives me a feeling similar to watching Mushishi at 3am or reading too much poetry before bed: strange, melancholic, and sort of comforting all at once. Goes well with tea.
Your words are divine music to my ears! I've been infected by Mushishi for a while and I'm afraid the situation is dire, there's no cure, but the symptoms are thus far benign. :)
And thank you so very much for leaving a rating. :)
How do we access Tea and Story with Ilar ? I just bought it, but the email I got doesn't have any links to it ? Sorry to bother you !
Hi, I'm sorry to hear that, can you tell me with which email you made the purchase? Then I'll see about getting you access.
I think I found your email. check your inbox for something from squareweaselstudio. :)
Playing it right now and wow it's so good! One thing I do have a question about though is the ambience music/sounds. Where did you get that, unless you made it yourself?? It's quite relaxing and nice to fill the silence when you don't want to listen to songs with words in them. Thank you, and what an amazing game you have created! The art is absolutely phenomenal!
We are so happy to hear you enjoy our game and our music! We made everything except this track: https://freemusicarchive.org/music/The_Pangolins/When_The_Wick_Is_GoneBeneath_Dark_Clouds/Beneath_Dark_Couds
The rest of the music will be available on our Kofi soon. One of our musician friends is remastering it so it will be much more professional sounding.
this looks very interesting and the art style is very cool! cant wait to play it<3
;-; you can't just leave me like that following mr fuzzpants into the unknown
Hue hue hue, you took a leap of faith, and I'll try to make it worth your while in the next Act, how's that? :)
Oh wow! Your game looks amazing, the art style is wonderful! I am going to play it today, I am very excited. All the best!
so so stunning.... i love that this exists. thank u dearly for sharing this with the world dev team<33
Thank you for submitting your project to our bundle. We are really excited to have you as part of this project. To ensure you are able to participate you also need to fill out a quick survey so that we’ll be able to add you to the bundle properly when the time comes.
Please fill out the survey here:
y'all really know how to get folks to bite, huh? well color me interested...
Thanks, that's nice to hear. We suspect it's because of Ilar, the getting folks to bite part, I mean. They're just that... biteable? ^^
Wow, this game is... something else. I don't remember ever playing something like this before and I've been an avid gamer for years. The art is beautiful and rather unique; one of the game's main highlights, for sure (it was actually the first thing that drew me to this game). The prose can be a bit 'flowery' but it kind of goes hand in hand with the atmosphere.
I got completely immersed as soon as I dived in (ha! - pun intended!), which is a good sign. There's something very dream-like about it all. It's a mystery, wrapped in an enigma, and it brings forth a concoction of emotions - part of me just wants to give in to the Abyss (maybe we forgot for a reason, that it's not worth the struggle, that it's better to just let go), the other part wants to reverse whatever is happening. I think Ilar means well but... my instinct tells me to trust the other "being" in the library? Who knows?
Thank you, it's really nice to hear someone is digging our creation. Mystery, wrapped in enigma, dipped in secret sauce, is what we're going for. The plot shall, appropriately, thicken in Act 2. I hope you'll dive deeper to fish for the answers!
The game really holds your attention from the very start - and I mean from the start menu alone. Just the starting screen sets out a tone for the game. It has the atmosphere of mystery, the dark intertwined with the light - the music and art work really well together and combined with the story itself I should not be surprised how easily I got hooked.
I admit, I was a bit confused at first, since the created world has it's own rules and terms I was unfamiliar with, but it was getting clearer and clearer as I progressed which, looking back, fits beautifully with our character who woke with no memory whatsoever.
Just in the Act 1 there was quite a lot branching and varying results depending on our choices - it was interesting going back and checking different choices to see how it would affect the outcome. And what outcomes they were! There's definitely a lot of potential and I'm eager to see how the story unfolds.
P.S. I only knew Ilar for 3 days but I love them with my whole heart.
Thank you so much! We really put effort into every single menu and pixel. Granted we couldn't do everything due to our limited technical knowledge and resources, but if we could do it, we did it. I'm so glad to hear that someone appreciates it. :)
Mesmerizing work... Do you have Patreon?
A beautiful game. Loved the music and the art.
Hi there, that's so kind of you. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it, and it's pretty cool to see someone do a playthrough. A few months ago I couldn't imagine having a game I took part in making be featured like this.
Everything in this game creates a unique atmosphere. The mystery story itself, characters, art style, and writing are charming. So, I've decided to write to ask if there is an opportunity that I can help with, like localization (Russian language)?
I love this! Will definitely be following the development.
If the game is crashing after the new update it is most likely because you used an old save file. If you play a fresh playthrough it should be fine.
So intriguing! The art, the music, the ambient sounds--it's so atmospheric! There's an unplaceable, niggling nostalgia along side the eldritch. So mysterious and beautifully done! I so look forward to more!
It's as if you pulled the flavors we were trying to infuse straight out of our heads, and it's wonderful to hear. Thank you for the kind words and for giving our crazy experiment a try, we hope you'll stick along for the ride. :)
How alluring! I signed up to itch.io just so I could leave a comment here. Everything is just so lovely and intimate, the choice of music also fills me with emotions. I did not realize this was a demo until it abruptly ended, shattering my heart into a thousand pieces. I'll be listening to the music to comfort myself while I wait for the full release.
Thank you for this experience, and best of success to you two!
About the shattering of heart into a thousand pieces, I know how you feel. I'll try not to make you wait too long to find out what happens later, but I can't guarantee that there won't be more heart-shattering.
Thanks for your appreciation!
Hi there! I regret that I couldn't contain myself and played your demo. Now I love it too much and suffer because I can't get more immediatly. *sigh* Now I need to forget all I saw and come back months later to play it again! Cruel!
Seriously though, it's super beautiful, intriguing and lovable! (older, darker Howl? Please, take my money).
Oh, but your suffering has transformed into joy and enthusiasm for us and having learned this, I’ve no doubt that the suffering has turned into happiness for you also, at least some of it I hope. What wondrous alchemy!
Wow, what an experience this was! With a gripping story and an addictive ambient - a combo of stellar art and the moodiest of soundtracks (and there's a lot of those), this game pulls you in and doesn't let go. If you fancy yourself a connoisseur of intrigue and fine art, you WILL like what it has in store for you!
Okay, I absolutely love the story so far, as well as the art style and music. I can't wait to see more!
That's cool to hear, thanks for taking the time to tell us! We'll try not to keep you waiting for too long. ;)
I am completely enthralled with the world, story, and Ilar. I just finished a first run of the demo and I am so enchanted with every aspect. The mystery of what happened, who the player character is, what our relationship to Ilar was like/will be, the music, the lore. It's all incredible. Thank you so much for sharing this creation with us, and I am immensely looking forward to this adventure. Now please excuse me while I go back through and check out the branches I missed!
Thank you so much! We’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed it so much. ;) We also can’t wait to make the next chapter! It should only get more interesting from here.
Oh btw please consider giving it a rating and/or review, it helps more people discover the game. :)
Hey, thank you for the reminder! I was having trouble finding rating/review on mobile but tracked it down on desktop. Haven't made time to check out the new visuals yet, but am looking forward to hanging with Ilar. I dunno if you're looking for this specific input, but I feel Ilar is great and wonderful and I'm not personally longing for more masculine or feminine aspects of them. Much love for them and you wonderful devs.
Hey, thanks so much, I appreciate that!
I am actually curious about whether people want more masculine or feminine variations of Ilar to accompany their story, so your input is very helpful, thanks for that too!
Wow, everything here looks awesome! The sprite of Ilar, the backgrounds and the UI. <3 You've picked music really good, it gave me chills. And the story? wow, Im waiting for more! I'll totally give you a follow on tumblr!
BTW I am already in love with Ilar... They're stunning.
Aw I'm so glad to hear you enjoy Ilar's company. Just watch out, they can be a handful. ^^
oh i forgot to say, if you liked everything about the demo, please consider leaving a rating and or review. :)
I've played through twice in the last 24 hours and am blown away! It's so packed with information it's hard to get through first time around but not in a bad way by any means. Gorgeous art and a beautifully heart-wrenching story. Trying to piece together what happen has been a delight. My roommate (who recommended the game to me) and I sat and talked about theories for hours last night and we cannot wait for more content. Overall, such an impressive feat.
That's wonderful to hear! Thanks for telling us.
We are actually looking into ways of making it a little easier to read, so thanks for bringing that up as well, maybe if we can manage that, then it'll allow more people to enjoy the story?
Feel free to join our discord, we have a channel called "The Abyss" for discussing theories and other spoiler contents. ^^
Poignant, touching, and just the right amount of sweet mixed with the horror of slowly-approaching dread.
I came across this page a while ago and decided to follow this project because the premise and unique art style drew me in. I am a fan of fantasy settings, especially dark fantasy rich in story, so this immediately became something I was looking forward to observing. Little did I know how many emotions this would fill me with.
This is a game about working to solve a threatening issue you cannot remember starting; a game about piecing together a life you no longer can remember, captured through glimpses of letters and the few recollections your companion Ilar may share when charitable. The letters were incredibly touching in the way they conveyed what emotions they could. Sadness. Longing. A touch of regret or warmth. Even love.
Throughout, I would often stop to just gaze at one of those letters and listen to the background noise. The music, if I could sum it up in one word, is haunting. Beautiful, but haunting nonetheless. Even in the moments of reprieve, when things didn't seem too grim due to our fellow ritual entity 'Mashed Potatoes' lurking in the background, the soundtrack still managed to give me a sense of sorrow. Like something was broken; there, but not wholly fixable yet. It instilled within me a melancholy I truly still don't have the words for.
The first act, while more than I could have hoped for when initially diving into the demo, left me grasping for more; more answers. More clues to the inevitable of what befell the magus (you) and Ilar. Like a good book, I became absorbed, and found I couldn't look away until the end screen came to greet me and shattered my fixation. Aside from the few small errors I found in the text, it was a refreshing and chilling experience. The world building was one of my favourite aspects of the game, next to the past told between letters and small memories sprinkled here and there from either you or Ilar. Ilar, on that note, is a mysterious character from what I've experienced, at times vague and cryptic with their answers, and I am fascinated to know more about them; who they are at their core, and where they stand in the aftermath of one dark ritual gone very wrong.
Thank you for the wonderful story you've begun to tell, Ze Hai Liu and Valentina Baric. I haven't indulged in something so profound in quite a while. I look forward to what your team has in store next.
Thank you so much for the thoughtful, eloquent, and kind words.
We’re so happy to hear that your experience with the game was so close to what we aimed to achieve, it gives us a lot of confidence and energy to keep going and finish it.
We took our time building the world and characters, letting them grow and develop almost as if with a will of their own, to the point that they often surprise us by choosing things we couldn’t expect. So we’re very much looking forward to what will happen next, even as we plan and create the rest of the game. Its a magickal experience.
Lastly, if you can remember what the mistakes you noticed were, please let ler us know, it’ll help us fix them easier. ;)
We hope you’ll stick with Ilar and us to see where the journey leads!
Thank you very much for the response! I appreciate it immensely. It was my pleasure to leave a review, as I've enjoyed The Remainder very much.
On that note, I decided to play through the new demo today to pick out the errors in the text I may have noticed; help you quash some of those! The newly released demo fixed many of the ones I noticed, but I still found a few. Is there a way I can contact you to better give you the errors I came across?
Let me know and I'd love to lend a hand!
